Personal Accomplishments
Vice-Mayor Clint Abbott is a native of Blount County. A 1961 graduate of Friendsville High School, Abbott graduated from Maryville College in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree. At Maryville, he majored in Health and Physical Education and minored in Science. He later received a Master of Arts in Educational Administration Supervision in January 1973 from Tennessee Technological University and an Education Specialist degree in Curriculum and Instruction in May 1981 from the University of Tennessee. He also has 30 additional hours above his Education Specialist degree.

Abbott started his education career at Townsend High School in January 1966 as a classroom teacher and coach. He moved from there to the Knox County school system before starting his long career in the Alcoa system. At Alcoa, he was a classroom teacher, coach, assistant principal and retired in June 1995 as principal of Alcoa High School, a position he held for 21 years.

Since retiring, Abbott worked as an education consultant and was the Assistant Principal and Athletic Director from 2000-2003 at Greenback High School. He was Inspector/Manager for Helton and Associates, Inc. from which he is now retired.

Abbott served as Vice President of the Tennessee Association of Secondary School Principals for two years; was Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) president for 3 years and Board of Control member for 9 years. He was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in March 1996, the Maryville College Wall of Fame in March 1998, the Blount County Sports Hall of Fame in November 1998, and the Blount County Wrestling Hall of Fame in January 2002. He was a TSSAA wrestling official for 40 years, an NCAA wrestling official for 20 years, and currently supervises TSSAA wrestling officials. He was on the Blount Memorial Hospital Board of Directors for five years and is currently a member of the Chairman of the Blount County Parks and Recreation Commission.

Elected as commissioner in June 1999, Abbott has been Vice Mayor since July 2003. In 2004, he was appointed to the National League of Cities’ Council for Youth, Education and Families and still continues to serve.

Active members of their Alcoa First United Methodist Church, the Abbotts have a son and daughter and are grandparents to four grandchildren.
