Detective Unit

The Detective Unit is a specialized unit with the responsibility of handling those investigations that require special expertise, or because of their complexity or geographical considerations do not lend themselves readily to completion by patrol officers.
Members of the Detective Unit are normally promoted from the ranks of the patrol division and receive extensive training in criminal investigations, evidence recovery, interviews and interrogations. In some cases, an investigator may specialize in a specific area such as child sexual abuse or crime scene processing.

The unit is currently staffed with four sworn officers, consisting of one lieutenant, one sergeant, two detectives. The unit is augmented with an officer from the patrol division who is assigned to the Fifth Judicial Drug Task Force. All investigators are subject to be called in for duty 24 hours a day. At a minimum, each investigator is also required to perform after hours, on-call duty on a seven-day rotating schedule.
Investigators are assigned emergency-outfitted vehicles to perpetuate safe, rapid responses to crime scenes as well as basic tools for the collection and preservation of evidence.
Investigators may be utilized in probing the following types of criminal activity including, but not limited to:
- Death of a violent or suspicious nature
- Aggravated assaults
- Armed and simple robberies
- Burglaries and thefts that involve extenuating circumstances, identifiable modus operandi, or exceptional amounts of property damage or dollar value
- Any major disaster where investigators can assist in identification of victims
- Kidnapping and extortion
- Rapes, suspected rapes and sexual assaults
- Bombings
- Missing persons
- Investigations of vice, organized crime and intelligence activities
- Child abuse
The Detective Unit handles approximately 500 cases per year, as well as a host of other duties such as, but not limited to:
- Background investigations for applicants of beer permit licenses
- Assisting with the Citizen’s Police Academy
- Liaison to other law enforcement agencies
- Assistance of patrol officers in the conduct of their investigations
- Investigative support for the district attorney
