Personal Accomplishments:
A native Alcoa citizen, Commissioner George Williams grew up in the Oldfield area of Alcoa along with his five brothers and three sisters. He attended the Alcoa school system at Charles M. Hall School, which at the time held grades 1 through 12. While at Hall, he played basketball and football. He enjoyed theatrical experiences, especially performing with fellow classmate and Alcoa native, internationally famed storyteller, Linda Goss. He graduated from Charles M. Hall High School in 1965. From 1965 to 1969, he attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, majoring in Business Administration and Vocational Education.
After attending U.T., Williams worked for Oak Ridge Associated Universities in the Manpower, Education, Research and Training Division. He then began an 18-year career with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in Economic Development as a Business Development Specialist in Customer Service and Marketing. After retirement, he opened his own business as a financial services provider. He continues operating and managing his business along with serving as manager of the Alcoa City Center, a business and education center.
Williams formerly served on the Blount County Vocational Advisory Board. He has continued to serve the public in numerous positions including chairman of the Blount County Chamber of Commerce and the Blount County Historical Museum; on the board of directors for the Pellissippi State Technical Community College Foundation, the Blount County United Way, the East Tennessee Development District, the Tennessee School Boards Association, the Blount County Community Action Committee, and the Blount County Library. He is a member of the Private Industry Council. He was elected to the Alcoa Board of Education in 1989, serving in that capacity for ten years and never missing a board meeting. During that time, he was named to the All Tennessee School Board.
Williams is the father of two daughters and is an active church member. His hobbies are playing music and singing. He plays the drums, bass and says he “fools around” with the keyboard. He sings second tenor, bass and contra bass, which he likes most.
