02/22/2007    Cyclist Killed on Alcoa Highway

On Thursday, February 22, 2007 at approximately 6:26 a.m., the Alcoa Police Department investigated a fatal accident on Alcoa Highway (US 129) at Wrights Ferry Road. The collision caused the closure of the southbound lanes of Alcoa Highway for approximately 2 hours, causing significant traffic congestion for morning commuters. Stephen Zane, III, driving a 2004 Mitsubishi Gallant, was attempting a left turn from Wrights Ferry Road to northbound Alcoa Highway. A 1999 Yamaha ZR1 sport bike, operated by Marvin Tilton Bone, age 37, of Knoxville, was southbound in the outside lane of Alcoa Highway approaching Wrights Ferry Road. The initial investigation revealed that the driver of the Mitsubishi Gallant failed to yield the right of way, pulling into the path of the sport bike. The operator of the sport bike was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Mitsubishi Gallant was issued a citation for failure to yield. This is the fourth fatal traffic accident this year within the City of Alcoa.
