DEFINITION OF CLASS

This is skilled work in the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment and light equipment used in the daily operations of the Landfill.  Employees in this class are also required to assist other Landfill employees and skilled workers in various trade areas, and performing semi-skilled tasks related to Landfill operations.  Employees are responsible for the efficient and safe working condition of assigned equipment.  Employees in this class may also be required to perform the duties of a lesser skilled employee when needed.  Employees in this class generally exercise no supervision; however, they may oversee the work of subordinate employees on special assignments.  Work assignments are received directly from an immediate supervisor or from a leadworker working independently of direct supervision.  This is a safety-sensitive position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES PERFORMED

·        Performs repairs and preventative maintenance on heavy and light equipment; such as track dozers, track loaders, landfill compactors, backhoes, heavy trucks, light duty trucks,                     mowers, etc.;

·        Makes repairs and adjustments to automotive, truck and equipment systems such as brakes, ignition, electrical, hydraulic, compressed air, transmissions, drive-train, fuel (gasoline                 and diesel), exhaust and other similar and/or related systems;

·        Repairs and maintains both gasoline fueled (two-stroke and four-stroke) and diesel fueled engines; 

·        Keep accurate maintenance records up to date

·        Maintain inventory of parts and materials;

·        Responsible for maintenance shop appearance and safety regulations;

·        Conducts equipment inspections to determine that equipment is safe to operate;

·        Conducts equipment inspections to determine that equipment has necessary hydraulic fluids, oils, and filters, to ensure proper operation of equipment;

·        Regularly inspects and cleans radiators of paper and debris to insure proper operation of equipment;

·        Performs routine cleaning of heavy equipment tracks, radiators, belly pans, and other heavy equipment parts;

·        Cleans and maintains shop area and building;

·        Cuts, welds, and fabricates metal;

·        Performs minor auto body repair, touch up and related work;

·        Changes and repairs tires and tubes;

·        Subject to call-in for specified emergencies;

·        Reports to work as scheduled and on time, even under inclement weather conditions.

OTHER DUTIES PERFORMED

·        Performs manual labor and other duties when required;

·        Completes training and coursework necessary to obtain and maintain certifications designated by the Department Director;

·        Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or equivalent, with either:

            1. Ten (10) years auto / truck / heavy equipment repair and maintenance experience; or

            2. Graduation from a school specializing in auto / diesel / heavy equipment mechanics     and five (5) years’ experience in auto / truck / heavy equipment repair and maintenance.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

·        Comprehensive knowledge of and skills & ability in the principles and practices of the maintenance and repair of all classes of automotive equipment, trucks, and construction                         equipment;

·        Extensive knowledge and skills & abilities in the use of the tools and equipment used in the automotive and equipment repair trade;

·        Knowledge of and skills & abilities in various welding, cutting, and metal fabrication techniques;

·        Ability to repair and maintain all classes of small-engine, automotive and construction equipment;

·        Ability to read, analyze, and interpret written communications, technical bulletins, schematic drawings, etc.;

·        Ability to respond to verbal inquiries from management, staff, and customers;

·        Ability to effectively present information verbally and/or in writing;

·        Ability to operate computer diagnostic equipment/software for automotive and heavy equipment;

·        Ability to apply basic computer skills and a command of various computer software such as e-mail, scheduler, Excel, and Microsoft Word;

·        Extensive knowledge of the methods, techniques, tools, and supplies involved in heavy equipment maintenance;

·        Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, including heavy lifting, for long periods of time and frequently under adverse field conditions;

·        Knowledge of applicable safety precautions; ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely;

·        Ability to work both independently and with others, and to complete daily activities according to work schedule;

·        Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions;

·        Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public;

·        Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions;

·        Ability to learn new procedures and to apply the same to a variety of tasks;

·        Ability to schedule in-house work and contract mechanics to best suit landfill operations.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

·        Possession of a valid State of Tennessee Class B, Commercial driver's license, or ability to obtain the same upon employment;

·        Possession of certification specified by Department Director. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. 

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 200 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Inside and outside work repairing/maintaining heavy and light equipment, with exposure to dirt, dust, water, snow, wind, sun, fumes, odors, water, oils, grease, and all types of equipment fluids.

Possible exposure to biological, mechanical, electrical, or chemical hazards generally associated with a solid waste disposal operation.
