The City of Alcoa invites the public to join in its continuing Centennial celebration by attending two upcoming events.
The City and the Blount County Public Library will host a free showing of the City’s Centennial DVD, From 1919-2019: The Alcoa Century An Historical Documentary at the library on Tuesday, November 5th at 6:30 p.m. This is part of the library’s Southern Appalachian Studies events and will be presented by Blount County Circuit Court Judge and City of Alcoa Historian David R. Duggan.
A production of the “Voices of the Valley: Black Voices of a Company Town Called Alcoa” will be presented on Thursday, November 14th at 6:00 p.m. in the Alcoa High School Lyceum. The one-act play, written by Joyce Williams Leo, is a choral play and with monologues that tell the story of African-Americans and their families recruited from the deep-south to work in the pot rooms of the Aluminum Company of America’s Alcoa plant.
Play cast members include Marlena Allison, Cato Clowney, Harold Flowers, Robert Darrell Orange, Paul Sudderth, Lucinda Mynatt Williams, and Stanley Ish Young, Jr. Dr. Shirley Carr-Clowney, a member of Alcoa’s Centennial Committee, has coordinated the play productions. Leo’s script is based upon more than 60 interviews gathered by Dr. Carr-Clowney and Maryville College sociology professor Dr. Susan Ambler, and from which interviews composite characters were created for the play. Larry Ervin, director of multicultural affairs at Maryville College, created the original music for the play.
