Definition of Class
This position performs duties associated with the operation of certified truck scales, waste inspection, waste segregation, and waste screening in support of daily landfill operations. The position involves extensive communication and contact with the general public. The position requires extensive visual examination, documentation and decision making skills for proper determination of waste disposal. The position also involves manual labor and working outside in adverse weather conditions. Employees in this class shall possess (1) interpersonal skills and abilities that allow interaction with the general public in a positive manner, (2) the physical strength necessary to manually move and assist with movements of waste materials such as tires and appliances, and (3) decision making skills and eyesight that allow for the proper segregation of waste materials. Employees in this class shall be self-motivated and able to perform their duties with minimal supervision. Employees in this class generally exercise no supervision. Work assignments are received directly from an immediate supervisor or from a leadworker working independently of direct supervision. This is a safety-sensitive position. |
Essential Duties Performed
100% -- Operates and maintains certified truck scales;
- Operates computer, accurately entering data from scales for data collection and billing purposes;
- Maintains, monitors, and directs traffic flow through and around the Landfill scales;
- Provides daily, weekly and/or monthly summary reports as directed;
- Accurately completes state required special waste manifests, waste tire manifests and other similar records and reports;
- Performs waste inspections & screening, waste segregation, and completes inspection forms;
- Screens waste for compliance with applicable regulations;
- Completes waste inspection reports;
- Directs drivers to appropriate tipping locations within the landfill facility;
- Assists residents and customers with the segregation of trash and recyclables in order to ensure items are disposed of in the appropriate areas;
- Communicates with residents and customers regarding waste disposal and waste acceptance;
- Moves and handles various waste and trash items to ensure proper disposal, such as tires, appliances, paint, oil, etc.;
- Answers and responds to telephone inquiries;
- Operates two-way radio;
- Maintains a cash drawer for cash payments;
- Makes cash deposits to financial institutions;
- Completes deposit forms for cash deposits;
- Maintains scales and walkways during inclement weather;
- Provides solid waste disposal and educations information to the public;
- Operates light automotive and construction equipment;
- Utilizes appropriate safety equipment as needed;
- Observes safe driving precautions and uses caution in operation of equipment;
- Washes interior and exterior of assigned equipment.
- Interacts with the regulatory officials / agencies dealing with issues related to solid waste disposal.
Other Duties Performed - Answers after-hours alarm calls;
- Assists leadworkers with on site construction projects as needed;
- Performs manual labor and other duties when required;
- Performs related work as required.

Minimum Education Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent, with one (1) year customer service, waste operations, or related experience |
