The City of Alcoa is currently working to provide this service. However, until this method is fully tested and evaluated, you must come in to our City of Alcoa Municipal Building at 223 Associates Boulevard in the Springbrook Corporate Center to sign up for service.New Electric Service

Avoid lunch time if at all possible (i.e. between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.). Mondays, Fridays, and days after holidays are also the busiest for all employees working with customers - clerks, new service, and customer service. If you need same day service, you must submit your request before noon.New Electric Service
-
Generally it only takes 5 to 15 minutes to set up a residential account, depending on if the service set up is new or a transfer of service. However, during lunch the volume of customers increases and the reps are generally taking their lunch as well. Also, if a customer has an uncommon situation or request, it can increase the time to process or key in the information to the billing system.New Electric Service
-
The summer season is busiest from June to September as the New Service Reps process an average of over 1,000 customers per month during these months.New Electric Service
-
The New Service Reps process 55 to 75 in-house customers on average daily. This does not include processing internal emails, phone calls, or service tickets.New Electric Service

Tree Trimming Program
8-
Tree Trimming Program
We typically trim or remove trees on a regular cycle of 4 to 5 years. We also trim on an as-needed basis or by customer request. However, if storms or strong winds come to our service area, we assess the damage and work with the Public Works Department and/or tree trimming companies (depending on the severity of the damage) to remove hazardous trees or limbs.
-
Tree Trimming Program
AED only trims trees that pose a potential hazard to primary or secondary power lines and trims trees that have grown within the line clearance trim zone. Trees directly under the power lines and trees considered a danger to fall into the lines (typically dead or leaning trees) may be removed. These are normally the lines that run parallel with the street. We typically do not remove trees interfering with service wires (wires running directly from the house to a transformer), as these are the customer's responsibility.
If the tree in question poses an immediate, serious or dangerous threat to your electric system, we will be glad to send an AED representative to assess the situation. We contract with certified arborists to ensure healthy and safe pruning methods are used.
-
Tree Trimming Program
Primary Distribution lines will be trimmed to a minimum clearance of 10 feet from closest conductor. Limbs may be trimmed further from the lines to comply with lateral trimming methods. Limbs overhanging lines will be trimmed as high as possible. We will make every effort to eliminate weak, diseased and dead limbs above the wires that may fall or blow into the wires. See link below for standard clearances.
-
When we can, AED uses lateral trimming methods, which entail removing limbs at natural detachment points (laterals) or to the parent branch to help facilitate healing around the pruning site and strengthen branches. We also use directional pruning that redirects the growth of the tree away from the power line, minimizing re-sprouting or re-growth. Lateral pruning does not harm the tree’s natural defense systems, protecting the tree from decay.Tree Trimming Program
-
Tree Trimming Program
AED only trims trees for Electric line clearance in the interest of reliability and safety of our workforce and customers. As such, you may find that your tree does not have a symmetrical appearance following our trimming. Each tree is different, however, as the amount of lateral trimming that has to be performed depends on how the tree might interfere with power lines. In most cases, a few months of re-growth makes a big difference in appearance following pruning. With lateral trimming, the re-growth is naturally directed away from the power lines.
-
Tree Trimming Program
The Alcoa Electric Department only contracts with qualified tree companies who meet our guidelines and specifications.
-
Tree Trimming Program
If we are trimming and removing during routine maintenance, we will chip limbs under 6" in diameter if it is in a maintained area. Brush resulting from tree trimming may not always be picked up immediately. Residents should allow 7 days for clean up, after which a call may be made to the electric department at 380-4890. However, large wood (greater than 6” diameter) in a maintained area will be cut into manageable size pieces and left as close to the stump as feasible. Property Owners can call into the City of Alcoa Electric Department and request large wood to be left in longer lengths than manageable size pieces. If trees are removed and brush is cut in an unmaintained area, the aforementioned will be chopped up and/or placed to lie flat with the terrain. Vegetation in an unmaintained area will not be chipped or hauled off. The City of Alcoa Electric Department will not chip, haul or remove brush, debris or trees that have fallen due to natural causes or have to be cut for storm restoration purposes by City of Alcoa Electric Department employees or by employees from our contracted tree companies. Our primary responsibility, during a restoration event, is to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.
-
Our overall goal is to maintain an exceptionally reliable electric system and to ensure public safety. State laws give AED the legal right to do what is necessary to maintain and protect the electric system within the right-of-way to provide and maintain utility services for the common good of the community.Tree Trimming Program

When utilizing single-stream recycling all recycled materials are mixed together in the collection trucks and are then sorted at the automated processing facility located in Knoxville. This simplifies things for residents who will not have to worry about sorting any items.Recycling
-
There is no additional cost to the city or its residents.Recycling
-
It makes recycling even easier for Alcoa’s residents. The addition of these materials will significantly increase each household’s recycling volume, therefore adding life to the Alcoa/Maryville/Blount County Landfill. With this wider range of materials that can be recycled and the convenience of curbside recycling, Alcoa’s residents continue to demonstrate increased environmental stewardship while leading their neighbors in Blount County and throughout most of east Tennessee.Recycling

If it is a recyclable plastic item, there will be an identification code number inside the triangle shaped recycle logo. This is generally located on the bottom of the item. To the consumer, the number doesn’t mean much, but for recyclers it is a means to identify the resin content of bottles and containers in the recycle stream.Recycling

We strongly encourage our residents, business owners and visitors to dial 911 at any time they need assistance, even if they are not sure about the urgent nature of it. One of the many benefits of having a local 911 Center is our flexibility in providing a much improved level of service. We do not want our citizens hesitating over the decision to call 911 or our seven-digit number. When in doubt, call 911. Another issue we see is when people have an urgent situation and , out of habit, call our seven-digit number instead of 911. This can actually hinder our response, because the tele-communicator does not get the information into their CAD console automatically unless the call comes in on 911.Police Department

Herbicide Treatment
8-
Herbicide Treatment
Herbicides target growth hormones and specific processes that are unique to plants. The EPA requires chemical manufactures to study herbicides for years and spend millions of dollars—to demonstrate that it will not harm humans or animals—before herbicides can become EPA approved to be used by licensed applicators for rights-of-way applications.
-
Herbicide Treatment
Property owners can opt-out by signing and abiding by our Rights-of-way Agreement. This agreement is between the City of Alcoa Electric Department and the property owner and requires the property owner to continually maintain a clean rights-of-way, except concerning compatible species such as dogwood (Cornus Florida) or Black Haw (Viburnum Prunifolium).
-
Herbicide Treatment
Herbicides we use can be applied to the waters edge according to the manufacturer’s label. Any herbicide that makes it to the ground bind strongly to the soil and are immobile.
-
Herbicide Treatment
As a courtesy, we make every effort to inform our customers. We have pre-planners that go door to door ahead of time and leave door tags if no one is home. We also send out text to those who have an updated cell phone on file with the Electric Department. We also have information available on our website.
-
Herbicide Treatment
Our contractors use low volume methods. Individuals walk our rights-of-way with backpacks or work out of a UTV. This year treatment will consist of a stem treatment during the dormant season and follow up foliar spot treatment only in areas where we did not receive our desired kill rate with the stem treatment.
-
Herbicide Treatment
We only use herbicide in a particular area approximately one year after cutting crews have been through an area. We are on a cycle program and thus after cutting an area and then applying herbicide it will be at least 3-4 years before we are back to a particular area.
-
Herbicide Treatment
We are only targeting broad leaf species that have the potential to grow up into our power systems. We use selective herbicide mixes that do not target grasses.
-
Herbicide Treatment
The contractor has let us know that they plan to use the following chemicals (we have included the MSDS links for each)
